Daily Prayer: Reflecting God’s Image in Everyday Life
A daily prayer (and sermon) to reflect on the journey of life that brings us closer to God.
Scripture:
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18
Transformation is a journey that draws us closer to God and shapes us into His image. In 2 Corinthians 3:18, the Apostle Paul speaks to this powerful process. He writes, “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
Paul’s words here carry a profound meaning. He says we approach God “with unveiled faces.” He’s referring to a story from the Old Testament. When Moses met with God, he wore a veil afterward because his face reflected God’s glory so brightly that people couldn’t bear to look at it. But here, Paul tells us that as followers of Jesus, we no longer need a veil. Christ has removed that barrier, allowing us direct access to God’s presence.
With that access, Paul says, we are invited to contemplate or behold the Lord’s glory. But what does it mean to contemplate God’s glory? This act of beholding isn’t just a passing thought; it’s a focused attention. It’s choosing to set our minds on God through His Word, prayer, and worship. As we do, something powerful happens within us—God’s Spirit begins to transform us.
The Greek word Paul uses for “transformed” here is metamorphoō, the root of the word “metamorphosis.” Like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, this is a transformation of our entire nature. When we draw near to God, allowing His Spirit to fill us, we start to reflect His image more and more. It’s a complete renewal of our heart, mind, and character.
Paul goes on to say that this transformation happens “with ever-increasing glory.” This journey isn’t a quick fix or a single change—it’s gradual, often subtle, but always growing. Imagine climbing a mountain: each step brings us closer to the summit, and as we rise, the view becomes clearer. In the same way, as we seek God, our lives begin to reflect His love, beauty, and goodness.
Now, this kind of transformation isn’t something we accomplish by trying harder or by sheer willpower. Paul emphasizes that this change comes “from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” It’s God’s Spirit within us, doing the work, giving us strength, renewing our hearts, and gently shaping us to become more like Christ.
Transformation isn’t always easy, though. Sometimes, God’s work in us is uncomfortable. There are moments when the Spirit convicts us, asking us to let go of old habits or ways of thinking that hold us back. Growth often means stepping away from the familiar, from the comfort of old ways. Yet, God’s intentions for us are always good. He is shaping us into who He created us to be—people who reflect His love, peace, and goodness to the world around us.
This brings us to a vital point: transformation is a process, not an instant change. Just as a butterfly doesn’t emerge overnight, we don’t instantly become like Christ. Sometimes we may feel as if we’re making little progress. But remember, God is patient, and His Spirit is faithful. In Philippians 1:6, we’re reassured that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” God is committed to completing this work in us.
So, how does this transformation show up in our everyday lives? It begins with inviting God into every part of our routine—not just on Sunday, but in the moments that seem small. It means choosing kindness when we feel like reacting in anger, or showing forgiveness when we’ve been wronged. When we allow God’s Spirit to guide our responses, we start to reflect His love and grace, showing others what God is like through our lives.
This transformation isn’t just for our own benefit. It’s part of God’s purpose to reach others. Our lives become a testimony of His love, His patience, His mercy. When we reflect God’s glory, others can see His character in us, and through that, God draws others to Himself.
Today, consider how you can open yourself more to God’s transforming work. It might mean dedicating more time to prayer, spending time in His Word, or letting go of something that’s holding you back. Each of these small acts allows God’s Spirit to mold us into the image of Christ.
As you go into this week, let the words of 2 Corinthians 3:18 echo in your heart. We are being transformed with ever-increasing glory—a transformation that’s a gift from God. Each day, as we draw closer to Him, we reflect a little more of His beauty, grace, and love to the world.
Let’s close in prayer:
“Father, thank You for the incredible gift of Your Spirit. Thank You for the work of transformation You’re doing in each one of us. Help us to draw near to You daily, to open our hearts to Your shaping hands, and to reflect Your love to those around us. May we trust in Your Spirit to guide us, mold us, and make us more like Jesus. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
